Competition season is almost here for me (deadlines to enter anyway…) and since I earned my Master’s last year, this year I’m feeling like I can play around a little bit and take some risks with that I’m entering. Before, when I was earning merits towards my degree, it was important to me that those merits come from real client work so I felt like my Master’s was representative of the experience and finished product I give my clients. Now it’s a whole new game and I can test the limits of what I can do outside of the wedding world. So this is where I’m at with a possible competition album entry I’m calling “Taste the Rainbow”.
The inspiration for this album came from my sister Laura. She recently bought her first home and wanted some custom art for her walls. For the kitchen she thought it would be fun to have some macro images of fruit in colors that she loves. So she came down one day and we played with blueberries, purple cabbage, and lots of deep reds. After she left I thought it would be nice to have the full spectrum of the rainbow represented with the fruit images (not necessarily for her home, but for my now fruit collection) so I went out and bought some more produce and went to town photographing it. Shooting fruit is harder than you’d think. It has zero facial expressions and can’t move by simple voice command like my clients Plus some of it is more photogenic than others. I really had to focus on composition, lighting, and keeping the fruit hydrated…lol. So here’s a little taste of my attempt at food photography. I’m not planning to quit my day job, but some of these images did really turn out yummy.
Here’s a mock up of Laura’s kitchen. She plans to paint the arch to match one of these images but hasn’t decide which color yet…I can’t wait to see the finished product!
